"The event was run exceptionally well. As an early career artist I felt very comfortable and the experience was really enjoyable.
The facilitation really opened up the room during the feedback process, it was telling that the members of Flourish house were so willing
to take part, and I would contend that this was down to the wonderfully warm approach. It was a wonderful setting and really highlighted
the importance of the festival. Thank you for the brilliant

5 Ways To Begin
SMHAF Scratch Evening 2018
Following from the success of our scratch events last year and as part of The Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival’s commitment to fostering new work, we are
delighted to be able to offer ten artists from any performance discipline* to present scratch ideas as part of SMHAF 2018.
We are looking to curate a programme of original, interesting and high-quality ideas that explore mental health themes. Artists will present work at one of two evenings:
Saturday 19th May | Flourish House, Glasgow
Sunday 20th May | Roxy Assembly, Edinburgh
5 Ways To Begin… is an excellent place to explore new ideas and receive feedback from audiences. SMHAF Associate Artist Emma Jayne Park will support artists through a quick fire critical response process following their performance in order to gain the most from the audience insights. This opportunity is not available for finished pieces but will support performance or film in development that would benefit from audience feedback. Performances should be between seven and ten minutes in length.
Selected artists will receive:
- basic technical support (please note that Flourish House does not offer specialist lighting requirements but can present film.)
- marketing as part of SMHAF
- a stipend of £100 per performance.
- Photographic documentation of the performance.
*we are presently unable to support aerial performance.
To apply please send a short (No more than one A4 Page) proposal to firstname.lastname@example.org stating which venue you would like to perform in, detailing what you would like to share, which disciplines you work with, demonstrating your experience as a maker and explaining why the opportunity would benefit you at this time.
Deadline Monday 30thApril.
All applicants will receive a decision and feedback by Wednesday 2nd May at the latest.
